Prestatyn Community Forum- Monday 22nd March

A lively meeting with a good turnout from the community. Issues discussed as follows:

Tesco development - when is it going to start? Equally concerned that the prospect of Tesco coming to Prestatyn will adversely affect existing businesses in town although the Council took a view that Tesco would increase the footfall in the Town. A comment was made that until a few years ago there were 6 butchers in town, now there is only one. Mohammed (CEO of County Council) agreed to talk to Sir T Leahy CEO of Tesco to see what progress could be made with regard to the development.

Concern that there are no jobs for children leaving school , need more industry. Allied to this point the comment was made that Prestatyn is a tourist attraction but there appears to be no action taken to promote and increase tourist trade and activity.

Specific traffic concerns were raised which the Council said it would follow up with the residents concerned. Reference was made to the Coast Road and the speeding at specific times of the day ( morning and night).

Leader of the Council mentioned the Town summit , a conference whereby Council would invite everyone to discuss the future of the Towns and look to see ways in which regeneration initiatives can be taken forward.

Mohammed mentioned that education in Denbighshire is improving as per the recent Estyn report with far better outcomes for the children i.e. qualifications. Council has invested an additional £1.2 million in education as part of the new years budget which starts 1st April 2010. Mention was made that capital grants provided by Welsh Assembly Government is likely to reduce by between 30% and 50% and so the Council has to look to other sources to see how it can secure funding to continue with its capital improvement programme i.e. to improve existing buildings such as schools. The Council are currently looking at its existing assets to identify those that are surplus and which can be sold thereby releasing capital money.

Prestatyn High School welcome the opportunity of involving the community and is actively looking to see how the school can be used out of school hours for community activities. Any thoughts and ideas on this to be directed to the Headmaster Mr Pierce. Comment was made that PE facilities at Prestatyn High are poor which again highlights the issue of more money required to improve the facilities - back to the need for more capital money.

A plea from Youth services insofar as the youth service provision on Dawson Drive is underused and would like to see more young people attend.

Health was mentioned in that concern was expressed at the waiting times at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan and the closure of Royal Alexandra in Rhyl. Jane Trowman from the Health Board explained what action the Board are taking and they were doing everything possible to minimise any difficulties that patients may experience.
